Review: Lords Of The Earth: An Incredible But True Story From The Stone-Age Hell Of Papua’s Jungle

Lords Of The Earth: An Incredible But True Story From The Stone-Age Hell Of Papua’s Jungle by Don Richardson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
A great blessing. This book is a little more intense than Peace Child. The blood of martyrs was the price of admission to the Seng valley. It is sobering to think on these events taking place a little more than forty years ago. We did this as a family read-aloud and I highly recommend it.

Fifty Years in China: An Eventful Memoir of Tarleton Perry Crawford, D.D. [1909 ] by Lovelace Savidge Foster
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
T. P. Crawford was a baptist missionary in China from 1852 to 1902. He was committed to Scripture and following the simple biblical pattern, regardless of the cost. He was a passionate evangelist and seemingly tireless worker for the Gospel. He was selfless in his labors and sets a solid example with his life.
This book takes the good with the bad and it renewed my disgust with church politics. Missionaries face much pressure, friction, and even opposition on the field, but nearly all their stories reveal that they face the same from the churches back home. Men sit by warm fires in comfortable arm-chairs scrutinizing and second guessing the missionary’s every step, all while he has his life on the line everyday at the frontlines of the great commission.
I recommend this book. It ought to be required reading for every Baptist.
Review: A Hunger for God: Desiring God through Fasting and Prayer

A Hunger for God: Desiring God through Fasting and Prayer by John Piper
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This is a study of fasting and desire for God. Piper takes the principles of fasting from the Old Testament and weaves them together with the teaching on fasting in the New Testament. This book answers a lot of questions about the why’s of fasting. He enumerates the blessings of it and sounds many needed warnings also.
I recommend this book to get a better grasp of this subject. The chapter on Isaiah 58 is convicting and clarifying. There are practical implications for all believers. I believe every Christian should find it helpful.
Review: Playing for Knight: My Six Seasons with Coach Knight

Playing for Knight: My Six Seasons with Coach Knight by Steve Alford
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
A couple bucks in a Borders clearance bin and an interesting read. You get a little different perspective on some of Knight’s shenanigans, but shenanigans they remain. The fact that Alford came through the experience and reflected on the positives he learned probably says more about Steve Alford than it does Bob Knight. It was interesting to read his daydream at the end about his son playing for Knight at IU in 2010. I suppose then it seemed Knight was firmly ensconced and would retire with honor after a long productive career at Indiana. I guess we know the rest of that story. Good read for fans of the college game and some interesting bits with other big name players of the day.
Review: God Is the Gospel: Meditations on God’s Love as the Gift of Himself

God Is the Gospel: Meditations on God’s Love as the Gift of Himself by John Piper
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Books like this are scarce. The distinction of God Himself as the gift of the Gospel over against the gifts that God gives is an important distinction. Some might think it splitting hairs but they are wrong. God is the goal and the greatest gift of the Gospel. This vital truth is what is missing from so much popular American theology and prosperity proponents cannot even smell where it crossed the road. I highly recommend this book. It is worth several reads.
