Book Review: The Theology of the Book of Ruth

The Theology of the Book of RuthThe Theology of the Book of Ruth by Ronald M. Hals
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The book primarily focuses on the providence and hiddenness of God in the book of Ruth. A good portion of the book is given to that theme in other canonical books the author compares and contrasts to Ruth.

Book Review: Unceasing Kindness: A Biblical Theology of Ruth

Unceasing Kindness: A Biblical Theology of RuthUnceasing Kindness: A Biblical Theology of Ruth by Peter H.W. Lau
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The author traces various themes in the book of Ruth, e.g., providence, kindness (hesed), refuge, famine, God’s hiddenness, redemption, and mission. He discusses the canonical placement of the book with Judges, Proverbs, or Psalms as well as the earlier or later date for the writing of the book. Reading Ruth alongside the other books in different placements yields different insights. Overall, it is a helpful study.

Book Review: Acts: Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament

Acts (Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament)Acts by Darrell L. Bock
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is an excellent commentary on Acts. It is exegetical, theological, and historical. It is scholarly, but not so academic as to make it unreadable.

Book Review: The Narrative Unity of Luke-Acts Vol. 2: A Literary Interpretation

The Narrative Unity of Luke-Acts 2: A Literary InterpretationThe Narrative Unity of Luke-Acts 2: A Literary Interpretation by Robert C. Tannehill
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the second volume in a set. The first volume covers the book of Luke and this second volume covers the book of Acts. As the title suggests, this is a literary commentary focusing on the narrative unity of Luke and Acts. He is not so much dealing with exegetical issues or theological issues. Tannehill analyzes the text for patterns of recurring words, ideas, and structures. This book was helpful for studying Acts on the narrative level.

Book Review: A Theology of Luke and Acts: God’s Promised Program, Realized for All Nations

A Theology of Luke and Acts: God's Promised Program, Realized for All NationsA Theology of Luke and Acts: God’s Promised Program, Realized for All Nations by Darrell L. Bock
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Bock takes the Lukan books together and traces major themes throughout the two books. The continuity shows Luke and Acts to truly be a two volume work. The book has brief sections at the beginning providing concise commentary and then most of the book is arranged topically, bringing together references from both books that contribute to the topic at hand. It is a helpful book for studying either Luke or Acts separately, or both books together.
