Review: The Rise and Fall of Mount Majestic

The Rise and Fall of Mount Majestic by Jennifer Trafton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Wow. A very fun read. The story is imaginative and quirky. It has suspense and plenty of action, but nothing intense for young children and nothing gory. We did this as a family read-aloud and everybody loved it. The kids were begging me to read and asking me to read more. There were several times that we all laughed out loud. I recommend it for your family. You will enjoy it.
Review: Think: The Life of the Mind and the Love of God

Think: The Life of the Mind and the Love of God by John Piper
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Excellent and challenging book to think about God, and about His Word and world. We are surrounded with stimuli daily to think and act quickly. The most popular mediums of our day do not promote nor prompt deep thinking about the greatest things. We are continuously pressured to think superficial thoughts about trivial things.
It is refreshing to be told to slow down and think about important things. I love the directive to study the Bible and ask questions of the Bible. Why this word in this place? Why this precise argumentation? Why this parable to answer this question? Questions are not only for skeptics and doubters. We can ask questions by faith and by faith search and think for the answers. I recommend this book and thinking very highly.
Review: Lords Of The Earth: An Incredible But True Story From The Stone-Age Hell Of Papua’s Jungle

Lords Of The Earth: An Incredible But True Story From The Stone-Age Hell Of Papua’s Jungle by Don Richardson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
A great blessing. This book is a little more intense than Peace Child. The blood of martyrs was the price of admission to the Seng valley. It is sobering to think on these events taking place a little more than forty years ago. We did this as a family read-aloud and I highly recommend it.

Fifty Years in China: An Eventful Memoir of Tarleton Perry Crawford, D.D. [1909 ] by Lovelace Savidge Foster
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
T. P. Crawford was a baptist missionary in China from 1852 to 1902. He was committed to Scripture and following the simple biblical pattern, regardless of the cost. He was a passionate evangelist and seemingly tireless worker for the Gospel. He was selfless in his labors and sets a solid example with his life.
This book takes the good with the bad and it renewed my disgust with church politics. Missionaries face much pressure, friction, and even opposition on the field, but nearly all their stories reveal that they face the same from the churches back home. Men sit by warm fires in comfortable arm-chairs scrutinizing and second guessing the missionary’s every step, all while he has his life on the line everyday at the frontlines of the great commission.
I recommend this book. It ought to be required reading for every Baptist.
Review: A Hunger for God: Desiring God through Fasting and Prayer

A Hunger for God: Desiring God through Fasting and Prayer by John Piper
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This is a study of fasting and desire for God. Piper takes the principles of fasting from the Old Testament and weaves them together with the teaching on fasting in the New Testament. This book answers a lot of questions about the why’s of fasting. He enumerates the blessings of it and sounds many needed warnings also.
I recommend this book to get a better grasp of this subject. The chapter on Isaiah 58 is convicting and clarifying. There are practical implications for all believers. I believe every Christian should find it helpful.
